We love the debate, although the proof is in the listening.
It comes down to costs. Analog certainly sounds better with its natural compression when you hit the tape at a good level. Its certainly not common to assume you can walk into a studio any more and expect a well kept machine waiting for you. There is an up side for engineers who don't have to align heads at the start and end of the day. Digital certainly adds a lot of freedom to edit and be more creative with the files. The idea of cutting a whole chorus, or trying the chorus backing vocals over the bridge long after the singers have gone home, is not a time consuming thing to try. Cut and paste is our friend. It does sound harsher, and some converters are worse than others, but with a line of analog pre's and compressors treating the signal on the way in, it's going to sound good. |
